What can i use to remove acrylic enamel spray paint?

hi i bought a JS industries surfboard and the said he sprayed it with acrylic spray paint enamel and clear coat he did like a graphic design but any way i dont like it i want to remove what can i use on a fiberglass board that has been covered half by spray paint and clear coat? and if household items are also possible to use? What can i use to remove acrylic enamel spray paint?
Well the only possible household item that might remove it would be nail polish remover, but you need to be very careful with that. Nail polish remover is acetone based, and acetone is the normal solvent and cleaning agent used when working with fiberglass. A short exposure to a fairly well hidden area and then a rinse off with water shouldn't hurt anything. Another solvent I'd try first would be an enamel paint remover. It should effect the fiberglass less, but I'd still use the technique of trying it on a small hidden area and then rinsing it off quickly first. The problem you may run across is with the clear coat. If the clear coat is another clear enamel spray paint you may get it off, but if the clear coat is made from a polystyrene resin, used to seal fiberglass surfaces, you'll have problems. By the time you start to dissolve the polystyrene you'll also be softening the resins underneath it. If any of the solvents get to the foam core they'll eat through it like butter. You'll also be left with another problem if you do succeed in getting the paint off. Normally when you remove a paint that's been on fiberglass for a long time, it will leave a residual layer of pigment behind on any contrasting color surfaces underneath. What I mean is that you'll probably always have a very light image of the spray paint on the glass underneath anyway. Because the glass has fibers they wick up a little bit of the color, and that dye you'll never get rid of.

If you really want to try, get a cotton swab, pick out a small hidden area and try the various solvents in an inconspicuous location. I wish you luck, but doubt that I'd try the same thing. I think you have more to lose than to win by trying it.
